High quality supercapacitor can be manufactured from Boropukuria Coal

A group of scientists from Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia has derived a porous carbon material from coal of Boropukuria, Dinajpur, Bangladesh for fabricating high-power supercapacitor. Their research findings have been published in the Journal of Energy Storage (Impact Factor: 6.583) in 2020. The research team was led by Dr. A. J. Saleh Ahammad (Associate Professor of Chemistry, Jagannath University, Bangladesh) and Dr. Md. Abdul Aziz (Research Scientist III, King Fahad University of Petroleum & Minerals, KSA).

Bangladesh Nano Society (BNS) successfully organized a webinar on “Nanostructured Carbon from Boropukuria Coal Mine: Energy Storage Application” on December 19, 2020. Dr. A. J. Saleh Ahammad has delivered a keynote speech on the above mentioned title. Dr. Ahammad has discussed the possibility of utilization of our own resources to prepare high-quality porous nanostructured carbon materials. He also showed that the prepared porous carbon can be used for constructing a coin cell prototype supercapacitor device and tested with a light-emitting diode (LED).

Dr. Md. Ashraf Hossain, as scientist of University of North Dakota, USA has discussed on the topic presented by Dr. Ahammad. The discussant has also emphasized the use of our own resources to prepare high quality porous carbon, which can be used for the improvement of the performance of energy storage devices and batteries.

Dr. Shakhawat H. Firoz, Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry, BUET has presided over the webinar while Dr. Mohammad Mahbub Rabbani, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) has hosted the webinar.

A question-answer session has been conducted by Dr. Abu Bin Imran, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, BUET at the end of the webinar. A huge number of participants including students, faculties and researchers from home and abroad have enjoyed the lecture and discussion and taken part in the Q/A session. The webinar was ended with a vote of thanks given by Professor Dr. Al-Nakib Chowdhury, a professor in the department of Chemistry at BUET. Bangladesh Nano Society regularly organizes webinars on different emerging topics.
